That’s right! Sparks and Billybob were the exact same person, Lane Merrifield. Sparks was the main blogger for World of Cars, like Billybob was for Club Penguin back then. They even added a feature that allowed you to unlock cool stuff using a Wi-Fi connection and the Cars 2 video game. That summer was also when Cars 2 came out, and the game did a great job making updates to fit the movie- changing Lightning’s Piston Cup win number to fit the movie, removing Doc (poor guy), opening secret stores with spy stuff and updating some character looks as well as adding new ones (Francesco was a big one). I snuck online before school started just so I could become a Piston Cup champion… It was worth it. A few of mine are actually on YouTube, but I’d rather not reveal my car’s name right now. A lot of our socializing was in each other’s yards, where we’d often throw parties and build amateur racetracks. We wouldn’t always be online at the same time, but we always had fun, no matter who was online. It wasn’t just a small number of people, there were tons of us. I still don’t remember when, but eventually I came into a rather large group of cars who would often socialize, hang out and race each other. Later, Sparks posted on the blog the first 25 finishers of the track, and I was one of the top 25! That was really awesome.Weeks, months went by. Eventually, in July of 2011, they released the LA International Speedway, the final track where we’d also win the Piston Cup.

A few days went by, and I enjoyed the game enough to buy a “sponsorship” (membership) to the game, which would allow me to buy things from stores, decorate my yard and begin a professional racing career (exactly like Club Penguin back then, except without the racing part).įillmore’s Fields Rally, one of my favorite local tracks.Įvery few months they’d release a new Piston Cup Circuit track, where members would be one step closer to becoming a champion. After a little practice though, I got used to it. You used your mouse to drive your car, which I found hard at first (you could also use arrow keys, which seemed harder), as I was more used to the simple mouse click controls in games like Webkinz (or Club Penguin, which I wouldn’t join until a little over a year later). When I first joined a server (like Club Penguin, World of Cars had servers), finished the brief introduction video and tutorial, I have to admit I was a little frustrated with the controls. But I kept practicing, and eventually I mastered the courses and began to earn more first places. There were little race courses spread around the main areas for everyone to play, and that’s where I started. This is not my image, they all come from various Wikias- Pixar, World of Cars and Club Penguin. After I choose all of my preferred car traits and my silly, pre-selected name, I was ready to begin. I was sold, and as soon as my show was over, ran down to the computer to sign up. I was watching Disney Channel (I have no idea what I was watching on it at the time) when an ad for this virtual world based off Cars came on. It depicted creating your own car, joining Lightning McQueen and his friends in Carburetor County and becoming a racing champion. Along with Thomas the Tank Engine, which has nothing to do with this, haha.Īugust 28th, 2010. Back in kindergarten, I remember my teacher would react to me bringing in my Cars toys all the time for show-and-tell, and other things like that. Back in elementary school, I was a HUGE fan of Disney Pixar’s Cars, and collected a ton of die-cast vehicles of all the characters (they STILL make tons of them).
